I Have No Clue

Does anyone know why they have the elephant and the mule?
(it might be a donkey)

Political cartoonist Thomas Nast was responsible for the Republican Party elephant. In a cartoon that appeared in Harper's Weekly in 1874, Nast drew a donkey clothed in lion's skin, scaring away all the animals at the zoo. One of those animals, the elephant, was labeled "The Republican Vote." That's all it took for the elephant to become associated with the Republican Party

i just looked it up... it was just a cartoonist making jokes. also i read that when andrew jackson was running for president someone called him mean names and he made it work for him. he changed his bad name into the donkey and got a lot of publicity.
